The Making Of Talkbot

The second post on this blog (Jan 2008) was called Machinima: Filmmaking Of The Future. For me, it still feels like something from the future even though the process in this video is less elaborate than the one outlined in that earlier post. I love that I’m able to work with most anyone, in real-time, in an amazing world where you can create just about anything you want – even goofy robots that love to curse.

The example Talkbot episode in this video is “Back To Normal” from yesterday. The embeded video is 1280 x 720 so if you put it in fullscreen mode you’ll be able to see all of the details. I’ll warn you that the video is nearly 37 minutes long (and 275MB) as many sections are of me working things out in real time. It’s also about as simple an episode as we can make and it actually took about an hour and a half to create. What was cut out was some of the story brainstorming, reworking one of Lifal’s lines of dialog, music selection and lots of progress bars and app launching.

Thanks so much for making and posting this. I’ve been wondering about it all. That mouth movement program is great. The whole routine is great. When you first mentioned doing it daily, I thought you were insane.
Seems to me that self-discipline must be a key component in success – to stop yourself getting carried away with all the toys? I think I’d end up fiddling with needless bits of animation for hours and hours.

That’s fantastic, really interesting to see your workflow and dedication. Yeah that crazytalk software is really cool i’d love to try it for some animation, just a shame they don’t make it for mac as i don’t have parallels installed.

I like the idea of putting limits on yourself, i think limits are what make us think more creatively, after-all look how popular twitter is with it’s solely 140 character allowance. I’d like to start thinking in that sort of way and perhaps i’d create some more video if i didn’t think that i could make absolutely anything i wanted at that time.

    Great Post!

It was a hard thing at first to not do all the animation, especially when I’m inspired by beautiful things like this http://www.vimeo.com/5543976

Fantastic view of your workflow and so many great tips. Very inspiring; It’s great to see how you can accomplish so much. Yoda’s screen test cracked me up. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this (on top of creating talkbot.tv episodes everyday!)

Jeepers-creepers, Verdi. You remain my hero.
