Exporting for iPod/iPhone straight out of Final Cut Pro has been messed up from the day Apple came up with these presets. So I made this screencast to show you how I deal with it. For best results put this thing in fullscreen mode.

Thanks for this, Verdi. Very interesting – and bizzare that Apple has never fixed this export problem. I didn’t know about it as I’ve never needed to export for iPod, but good to know!
Glad to see you showing the Command-J function in QT Pro to change aspect ratios…I use that a lot for fixing videos at work, one of my favorite tricks.
You remain my hero, Verdi. Finish this project I’m on 11/3 and will be free ’til mid-November to play in 2L. Let’s DO something. I’m at your service there for whatever nefarious art project you got going, blah, blah.
Either that, or I’m trying to make a documentary and rather stuck. Maybe you could help me get unstuck.
Interesting. Good to know for the future. I’ve never come up against this as I always export an uncompressed master, much like you did, as an intermediate step and do all my encoding in Telesteream Episode, and set my frame size, rate and PAR there. I never go out of FCP to finals. Going via compressor may give you further options to correctly set frame size that direct export from FCP wont.
Like I said, good to know, though.
cheers
Someone on the videoblogging list suggested compressor which I didn’t try before making this screencast because it’s been messed up in the past. But Compressor does works correctly now – at least the version in FCS 2. For some reason though the 480 x 270 900kbps, “iphone” preset isn’t available in Compressor. Also, like you said, I like to export an uncompressed master anyway so this method works fine for me.
Hmmm…that’s interesting, I am guessing that you can’t create your own preset out of FCP? Vegas, let’s me modify any presets to create my own…..good to know though…
Another benefit of using Compressor is that it will keep chapter markers, giving you a nice way to navigate a long video on the iPhone. They will be lost if you export to a Quicktime movie and re-export again in Quicktime Pro.
